YEREVAN. – The new Electoral Code discussions with the opposition forces are very useful for all political forces, ruling Republican Party of Armenia MP Karine Achemyan stated at a press conference on Friday.

She noted that the Armenian authorities have never been this much attentive toward the opposition as they have been in recent years.

“We actually need consolidation to be able to hold transparent and fair elections,” Achemyan added. “We have to do everything to be able to enhance our international position.”

Opposition “Heritage” National Assembly Faction Secretary Tevan Poghosyan, for his part, stated that the ongoing discussions with the opposition forces regarding the draft election law are not a display of goodwill by the authorities, and that such talks are stipulated by law.

“The important thing is what result we will achieve in the end [of these discussions],” Poghosyan noted. “Therefore, I call on my colleagues to rejoice when we achieve the acceptable provisions.”

The new Electoral Code of Armenia shall be adopted by June 1.
