YEREVAN. -- The key issue of the construction of the Armenian nuclear power plant’s new power unit is the export of electricity, announced Kirill Komarov, deputy director of Rosatom, the Russian state corporation, during a briefing in Yerevan with Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Areg Galstyan.

According to him, in order to determine the level of power of the future unit , one needs to understand whether it is possible to supply the electricity not only for Armenia, but also for the neighboring countries . " The intergovernmental agreement is signed, and it has not expired its power yet.   When we understand the essence of economic justifications, we will try to implement this project , " said Komarov .

It is important to recall that by the end of 2015 the Armenian government announced that it declined the power unit with a capacity of 1060 MW (earlier estimated accordingly by the international company Worley Parsonpreviously) and plans to construct a new one with a capacity of 500 - 600 MW. According to Rosatom experts, it will be cheaper to build an average unit, but the costs for the electricity provided by that power unit will be more expensive, since a number of payments during the construction of nuclear power plant do not depend on its capacity. The government extended the terms of the utilization of the Armenian nuclear power plant till the end of 2026. Prior to that, a new unit needs to come into operation, the construction of which is planned to start no later than 2018.
