The American Corporation Twitter deprived the US intelligence agencies from the access to a service, which analyzes the messages of all the Twitter users, filtering out the necessary information for customers, reported The Wall Street Journal on Sunday.
According to The Wall Street Journal, in the past two years the US intelligence agencies used the service with allowed them to track information about the threat of terrorist acts, riots, or political unrests in the world.
As the newspaper notes, the US intelligence agencies learned about the terrorist attacks in Paris that took place in November last year with the help of Dataminr, shortly after they had occurred . The server has warned the United States intelligence services about the attacks in Brussels a few minutes before the news appeared in the world media .
Now, Twitter decided to close the access of special services to Dataminr . As the company notes , the internal policy of Twitter prohibits the government agencies to use its services for intelligence purposes. At the same time, Twitter did not specify how the US authorities have been using Dataminr for two years in that case. As the company stated, the data published in the social network are available to the public , so the US government, as well as any other user, can browse open pages independently .
However, Dataminr continues providing information to private companies – their customers . The Wall Street Journal points out that the decision of Twitter raised irritation in the US intelligence community. The authorities are hoping that the company will change its decision . "If Twitter continues to sell this [data] to the private sector, but denies the government, that's hypocritical," said John C. Inglis, a former deputy director of the National Security Agency who left in 2014. "I think it's a bad sign of a lack of appropriate cooperation between a private-sector organization and the government, "reports TASS.
