The Armenian Genocide is not a matter of debate. Both the press and academic circles consider the events to be genocide, the well-known Guenter Lewy, the well-known American pro-Turkish historian, told the Hurriyet newspaper. He is the authors of a book on the Armenian Genocide, for which he was nicknamed “a Turkish agent.”

The 87-year-old historian said he encountered numerous problems with publishing his book. On learning about the contents, the publishing houses refused to publish it. Finally, the University of Utah agreed to publish the book in 2005.

The pro-Turkish professor said the Armenian Genocide is not a matter of debate any more. The press and most academic circles consider it a historical fact. However, Guenter Lewy disagrees. Yes, many people were killed, but the question is whether the aim was to annihilate the whole nation. He does not think so.

At his press conference at the Washington office of the Turkish-American Coalition, the pro-Turkish scholar spoke of the ways of struggling against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the near future. He expressed his concern over what may happen before 2015, when the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide is marked. Despite progress in the struggle against Armenian theses, much has yet to be done, Lewy says.

According to him, notorious Article 301 in the Turkish Penal Code does not allow free debate over the issue to be held, which is an obstacle as well.
