Germany embassy in Yerevan hosts football evening against Italy (PHOTOS)

YEREVAN. – On July 1, a football evening was organized at the Embassy of Germany in Yerevan, on the occasion of the Euro 2016 quarterfinal clash between Germany and Italy.

The Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter also attended the evening and recorded the most memorable moments.

Those who had assembled, including German Ambassador Bernhard Matthias Kiesler, certainly expected a Germany win and many goals in the match.

“Of course, as a diplomat, I would say 4-4 will be the best result; but since one [of the teams] will win, we hope it will be Germany,” said the ambassador. “But let’s not forget that I’m both German and European. And if another European team wins, perhaps even Italy, it’s just as good. I believe the best team shall win.”

Attendance by the “opponent” Italy fans and Italian Ambassador Giovanni Ricciulli attested to this European spirit.

The representatives of other embassies in Armenia were also sitting at the “diplomatic row.”

Diplomatically passing to England, which exited from Euro 2016 and the European Union within a week, the German ambassador said: “It certainly was a very difficult week for England. [But] let’s not forget that England is only a part of Great Britain. Wales are still in Euro 2016, albeit that’s not a great consolation for the British fans.”

The climate became more active once the match kicked off.

And in the end, Germany defeated Italy in a penalty shootout.

After the difficult win, we tried to find out which country Germany would like to see as their semifinal opponent.

“We certainly would be most delighted to witness a Germany-France clash” said Ambassador Kiesler. “[But] for us, the important thing was to reach the semifinals.”
