U.S. President Barack Obama offered assistance to Turkey as the country is investigation a coup attempt, representative of the White House Josh Earnest said.

During a phone conversation with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he also called for  restraint as the Turkish government pursues those responsible for the attempt, Reuters reported.

The American and Turkish leaders discussed the status of Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen who is accused by Turkish government of staging a coup. Earnest said the Turkish government had filed materials in electronic form with the U.S. government, which U.S. officials were reviewing.

Any issue concerning extradition will be considered within legal framework between the countries.
