The referendum on making amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan is planned to be held within the current year.
MP Siyavuş Novruzov, who is also deputy executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, told about the aforesaid to media representatives, reported Azeri Press news agency.
Novruzov said President Ilham Aliyev’s respective proposal is considered by the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan.
If the Constitutional Court gives the needed response within the period provided by law, preparations will begin for the referendum.
The draft constitutional reform, however, has caused sharp criticism by Azerbaijani opposition.
According to Azerbaijani media, these constitutional amendments propose the extension of the president’s term in office from five to seven years.
In addition, the President will be given powers to conduct early presidential election.
The document also provides for the introduction of the institution of the Vice President, whom the President of Azerbaijan will appoint and dismiss.
It is also proposed to lift the minimum age limit for presidential candidates.
In addition, these constitutional amendments will enable to dissolve the Azerbaijani parliament.
