YEREVAN. – The construction of reservoirs in Turkey, on the upper stream of the Araxes River, is not hazardous for Armenia, in terms of a lack of irrigation water.

Volodya Narimanyan, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of Water Economy of Armenia, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

As per Narimanyan, these reservoirs are primarily constructed for hydro energy purposes. In other words, the water is not supplied for irrigation by being used on the spot, but it is used for the operation of hydroelectric power plants.

“Yes, it loses its energy potential, but naturally, this is not important for irrigation,” added the Armenian official. “It’s all the same. That water flows down via Araxes, and appears at our [i.e. Armenia’s] disposal.”
