This year, the Tavrus village school, in Syunik Province of Armenia, has solely one first grader: six-year-old Levon.

He is one of the only six pupils at this school.

Two of the other five children studying in this school are Levon’s brother and sister.

The number of young families in Tavrus village is dropping each year.

“It’s difficult to make a living here; people are going [away],” village prefect Slavik Karapetyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am. “They want their kids to go to a better school, see a good life.”

Tavrus village has a population of only 34.

But 34 families once lived in this village, and the number of its residents used to be twice as much.
