YEREVAN. – The Russia-Turkey-Iran axis is as unlikely as the Georgia-Turkey-Azerbaijan axis.

Director of the Institute of Orientology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, historian and turkologist Ruben Safrastyan, stated the abovementioned at a press conference on Friday.

He noted that even if Russia supports this talk, it does so just to maintain it seeming influence and the US counterbalance in the Middle East.

“The same applies to the Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran unity,” added Safrastyan. “It may be of interest solely in terms of a transport corridor from the Baltic Sea to the Persian Gulf. But the interests of these countries differ a lot in other cases.

“Similarly, the Georgia-Turkey-Azerbaijan union which has been talked about often, but has not been implemented, by and large.”
