YEREVAN. - The Coalition to Stop  Violence against Women held a public event in Yerevan on Saturday on occasion of the National Day to Combat Domestic Violence, which is marked on October 1.

The event was held in the underground of Yerevan’s Garegin Nzhdeh Square, Malatia fair, some other events being planned in other places.

In the recent six years, 35 women died as a result of domestic violence in Armenia.

According to the OSCE 2011 data, over 50 percent of women respondents in Armenia are subjected to violence.

Currently, 119 countries in the world have legislation on domestic violence, another 125 having legislation regarding sexual imposition.  Still other 52 countries have similar legislation concerning intermarriage violence. Sadly, Armenia has none of the mentioned laws. The violence against women and girls continues, mainly in houses and behind closed doors. One of three women in the world are subjected to physical and sexual violence during their lifetime and mainly by their partner.

Armenia declared the National Day to Combat Domestic Violence in 2010 in memory of Zaruhi Petrosyan, who died as a result of domestic violence.   The message of the day is to prevent domestic violence, raise public awareness and create more healthy families.
