YEREVAN. – Although new Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan seems to be a very nice person, a team of enthusiasts with objectives is needed to change the situation in Armenia. 

Avetik Ishkhanyan, Chairman of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, stated the above-said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“I haven’t seen this concern [for implementing changes] in him,” stressed Ishkhanyan. “Karen Karapetyan is a very good economist, technologist, but this isn’t enough for a leap; and Armenia needs a leap.”

In his words, even if the new PM does wish to carry out systemic changes in Armenia, rhetorical questions arise.

“To do such reforms, he would have to ‘touch’ the most important ‘points’ of this system,” added the head of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia. “But this is not possible.”

Avetik Ishkhanyan expressed a view that even though political will is important to ensure free competition in Armenia, it is not enough, and there must also an independent judiciary, which, in his view, does not exist in the country.
