Supporters of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) started a rally in Yerevan at 6:35 p.m. local time. The action of protest has been organized on the occasion of the CE forum Democracy for Future in Yerevan.
A NEWS.am correspondent reports that several thousand supporters of the extra-parliamentary Opposition gathered in the square adjacent to the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts “Matenadaran”. They were joined by the Opposition activists that held a picket in front of the Government Palace, where the forum was being held.
The ANC leader, Armenia’s first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Chairman of the People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchyan, Chairman of the Republic Party Aram Sargsyan, as wall as the leaders of the smaller parties forming the ANC, are standing on the platform. The ANC member Levon Zurabyan is conducting the rally. Addressing the attendees, he stated that the action is supposed to show the international community and the participants in the CE forum the real human rights protection situation in the country, “with 13 political prisoners still in jail, and without independent television.”
