The UN new Secretary General Antonio Guterres will do everything possible to bring peace to Syria, reports the TASS, referring to the statement made by Guterres on October 13 at the session of the General Assembly.

According to him, currently the acting Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as well as a number of influential countries work in that direction. On Saturday they will hold a meeting in Lausanne to resolve the Syrian deadlock.

" I can only wish that they will be successful because it is the moral obligation of us all to stop the suffering of the Syrian people, " said Guterres.

As reported earlier, António Guterres has been appointed the ninth UN Secretary General. He will perform his duties starting from 1 January 2017. Previously, he held the position of the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees.
