The tragic death of the fishmonger Mouhcine Fikri has sparked protests in several major cities in Morocco, reports the AFP. The incident took place on October 28 in the port city of Al Hoceima. The Moroccan authorities had suspects that Fikri sold banned fish. The police found a batch of banned fish in his car. The fishmonger interfered with the police attempts to destroy the products, fell into a garbage truck, and crashed to death. Photos of Fikri in the garbage compression spread over the social networks outraged the public. On October 30 thousands of people attended Fikri’s funerals. 55 thousand people in downtown, many of them ethnic Berbers, went to the streets. Demonstrations were also held in Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat. The Interior Ministry of Morocco has launched an investigation on this case.
