YEREVAN. – Armenia sees the settlement of the Karabakh conflict only through peace.

National Assembly (NA) President Galust Sahakyan on Tuesday stated the aforesaid speaking before journalists in the NA, after his talk with President of the Belgian Senate, Christine Defraigne, who is visiting Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

In Sahakyan’s words, they discussed the steps—within the format of parliamentary cooperation—that are needed to invigorate Armenian-Belgian friendship.

“Reflecting on the resolution on Armenian Genocide recognition which the Belgian Chamber of Representatives adopted in late 2015, we discussed also the need for the adoption of a law initiative that provides for criminal accountability for denial of the fact of Armenian Genocide,” stressed the Armenian NA chairman. “In particular, taking into account the fact that paying tribute to the memory of the genocide victims has special importance 100 years on, since the risk of recurrence of genocide continues to threaten humanity our days.”

Defraigne, for her part, thanked Sahakyan for the warm reception in Yerevan.

“And this warmth is expressed by the fact that today I received the Armenian National Assembly medal, which attests to the unbreakable and lasting friendship of the two peoples,” added the head of the Belgian Senate. “I’m happy to be in Armenia, now.”
