Sargsyan-Medvedev-Aliyev urgent meeting in Russia on Medvedev’s initiative is conditioned by the fact that Baku’s position jeopardized the Karabakh peace process, which created an explosive situation, Head of the “Heritage” parliamentary faction Stepan Safaryan told NEWS.am.

According to him, presently Azerbaijani warlike statements and ceasefire violations de facto jeopardize the negotiation process. “Baku actually split at the international community and co-chairing states, particularly demonstrating the documents signed during the talks were of no significance,” Safaryan said.

According to him, both the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and world powers cannot but be concerned over the current situation. This accounts for the trilateral meeting in Astrakhan.

“The mediator countries, including Russia try to save the negotiation process. The meeting agenda will be rather full, but I am not optimistic about it,” he said. Meanwhile, Safaryan did not rule out new proposals will be presented to the parties at the meeting. “However, I do not think consensus will be reached, due to extreme polarization of the sides’ positions,” he concluded.

As NEWS.am reported previously, on October 27, a meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents will take place in Astrakhan, organized on the initiative of the Russian leader. The Presidents’ pervious meeting was held in St Petersburg in June 2010. During the meeting, the updated version of Madrid Principles was presented to the sides, which Yerevan took as a basis for negotiations.
