Poland was on the Armenian side during the Nagorno-Karabakh process, Adam Michnik, the Editor of the Gazeta Wyborcza and one of the founders of the Solidarity movement, stated at a meeting with students of Yerevan State University.
“I signed some letters addressed to Gorbachev when the Karabakh committee was formed. Armenians live in Karabakh. Karabakh Armenians did not want to live in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan did not find any possibility of settling the issue in a way acceptable to the Karabakh people. Then there was a war, and Azerbaijan lost it. It is impossible to revert to the past, just as the return of Kosovo to Serbia is impossible,” he said.
A dialogue is better than violence. “The question is where there was violence. In Karabakh and in Sumgait. If such a process takes place, a compromise needs to be found. A compromise is in Azerbaijan’s interests. I am for the Karabakh people to be masters of their own life. But no compromise is possible over Karabakh. On the other hand, Azerbaijan has the right to all the territories surrounding Karabakh, with a corridor between Armenia and Karabakh. I think it is the Minsk Group’s logic. Why is Azerbaijan trying to prove that completely independent Karabakh does not exist?” Michnik asked.
