YEREVAN. - Iran is ready to provide support to Armenia in railway construction, but it doesn’t have sufficient means.

Armenian Deputy FM Shavarsh Kocharyan stated the aforementioned Thursday, during the parliamentary hearings on draft 2017 State Budget.

Touching on the construction of Iran-Armenia railway, the Deputy FM noted that the project is costly. “Our agreements are insufficient for implementing this project. It is wrong to expect Iran to make investments, since the latter has found itself in a situation where it needs means for the full recovery of its economy after lifting the sanctions,” Kocharyan noted.

Referring to the construction of a railway with Azerbaijan under such circumstances, the Deputy FM stressed that the financial side of the project is provided by Azerbaijan.

“Besides, the railway is constricted on a plain, which makes things easier. Azerbaijan is building its part. Moreover, it is allocating money to Iran for constructing the railway on its territory as well. And in our case, Iran must build part of the railway on its territory, while we have to do that on ours,” Kocharyan noted.
