Only healthy people must service in the Armenian army, Colonel-General Yuri Khachaturov, Chief of the General Staff, RA Armed Forces, stated at the Oct. 23 meeting of the Republican Draft Board.

According to him, many young people were sent back to extra medical examinations right from the central assembly point. Ninety-two young men were sent back to treatment, and 44 were recognized unfit for military service.

The general said that military enlistment offices must supervise conscripts’ medical examination. “Most of them undergo medical examination in civilian medical institutions, and the results do not accurately show their state of health,” Khachaturov said. According to him, this accounts for a large number of unhealthy soldiers.

He is satisfied with the public’s growing confidence in the Armenian army. According to the general, this is the result of legal reforms, government resolutions and measures taken by RA Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan.

Speaking of the spring draft, General Khachaturov stressed that it was well organized, but the number of the ones trying to “beat the army” remains unchanged. “We have to carry out propaganda work with the population,” Khachaturov said. It will help people send their children to the army.

General Yuri Khachaturov pointed out that no case of illegal draft has been registered this year.
