The baritone-voiced Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen died at age 82, his son said late on Thursday, The Telegraph reported.

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.

We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.

A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief”, this was posted on his Facebook.

Leonard Cohen was born in 1934 in the Canadian province of Quebec. In 1966 he moved to the United States, where he began his musical career. Cohen was perhaps most famous for hits Suzanne and Hallelujah.

In 2008, he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In recent years the singer lived in Los Angeles.
