YEREVAN. - The announcement of Russian Foreign Ministry official on giving a legal status to the Russian language in the former USSR territory is another unsuccessful announcement made by a Russian official.

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP Artak Davtyan told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

''I am not familiar with that announcement but it is a very unsuccessful one. Let them make announcements regarding their country,'' he said.

Earlier, Special Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova of the Russian MFA announced that there are a number of issues related to the Russian language worldwide, among which is the status of Russian in adjacent countries.

''Our first task is the certain constitutional and practical strengthening of the Russian language in neighboring [ex-Soviet] countries,” she said.

Mitrofanova recalled that, at best, Russian is defined as the language of interethnic communication within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)—which includes Armenia, but this does not have a precise and clear legal explanation.

“In some [former USSR] countries—in Ukraine, Georgia, and the Baltic countries—the new generation doesn’t speak Russian,” she added.
