RA Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan held a meeting Oct. 29 with the European Parliament members Damien Abad and Michele Rivasi.

The RA Parliament’s press service informed NEWS.am that Speaker Abrahamyan pointed out European and international agencies do not always have full and reliable information on Armenia and on the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. In this context, European parliamentarians’ visits acquire greater importance, as they help see the situation on the spot and get objective information, which, in turn, helps form an impartial opinion.

Speaker Abrahamyan stressed that his visit to the European Parliament his June proved efficient. European orientation is Armenia’s priority.

Speaker Abrahamyan provided the guest with detailed information on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He stressed that Armenia sees a solution to the problem within the OSCE Minsk Group, on the basis of principles of territorial integrity, peoples’ right to self determination and nonuse of force. He expressed concern over Azerbaijan’s violations of the ceasefire, which claim human lives and complicates the establishment of peace and security in the region. He regrets the fact that the international community does not adequately respond to Azerbaijan’s behavior.

The European MP emphasized the importance of their visit to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh for forming a clear idea of the regional situation. They are critical of any attempts to isolate Armenia from regional projects, which hinders the region’s harmonious development. They also stressed the importance of Armenia’s energy security.

The European MPs attach high importance to such visits, as many European MP do not have a clear idea of the problems in the Caucasus.
