Ninety-three journalists and media representatives were killed around the world during their work in 2016, that is 19 less than in 2015, reports the International Federation of Journalists.

According to the IFJ, the deadliest countries for journalists in 2016 were Iraq and Afghanistan; many journalists were killed in targeted attacks, bomb blasts or caught in the cross-fire. IFJ president Philippe Leruth stressed that a decrease in violence against journalist and media personnel is always welcome, however, 93 deaths of journalists “leave little room for comfort.”

Overall, among those killed were 15 journalists in Iraq, 13 in Afghanistan, 11 in Mexico, 8 in Yemen, and 6 in both Guatemala and Syria. The Middle East was deadliest region for journalists with 30 killings, followed by Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Africa, and Europe.
