UN urges the Iranian authorities to release the prisoners of conscience and to provide the necessary medical treatment to those on hunger strike. A number of Iranian human rights’ defenders and activists who have been sentenced to prison, went on a hunger strike to protest against their illegal detention. Some of them are in serious conditions.

UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran Asma Jahanghir noted, that those people were placed in prison, because of exercising freedom of expression and peaceful assembly’s rights. According to her, a number of violations was registered, while carrying out their trials. Moreover, the allegations against them were too vague.

Asma Jahanghir stressed, that those people had to risk their lives to challenge the legality of the verdicts. Jahanghir reminded, that the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had recently signed a charter on humans’ rights. Thus, she urged the authorities to release those who were peacefully defending their rights.
