Landslides and rainstorms in Chile contaminated a major river forcing the authorities to cut off drinking water to four million people in the capital, Santiago, BBC reported.

The authorities stated that the water supply from the Maipo River would be cut to most of the city until the water flowed clear.

 The city's population stocked up on bottled water. Restaurants and businesses are closed by order of the authorities. The start of the school term was also postponed.
