France is concerned over the decision of Turkish authorities to arrest a reporter for a prominent German newspaper, French Foreign Ministry statement reads.

According to the media outlets, Turkish Authorities initially detained Deniz Yucel, a reporter of the Die Welt newspaper, after he reported on emails that a leftist hackers had purportedly obtained from the private account of Berat Albayrak, Turkey's energy minister and the son-in-law of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“France is extremely concerned over the decision of Istanbul court to jail German Die Welt correspondent Deniz Yucel,” the statement reads.

On Monday, Istanbul court ordered Yucel, a dual citizen of Turkey and Germany, jailed pending trial, a witness at the court told Reuters. French Foreign Ministry stressed that Turkey must comply with its international obligations and guarantee freedom of expression, in particular, of the press, which is an important part of a democratic society.
