The delegates of the Third Committee of the 65th Session of UN General Assembly, after many consultations and protracted debates, approved the resolution “Moratorium on the death penalty.” 107 nations voted in favor, 38 -against and 36 - abstained from the vote.
The resolution of this issue calls upon States that have not yet done so, to introduce a moratorium on executions, and to States which have abolished the death penalty - not to reintroduce it.

Resolutions adopted by the Main Committees General Assembly (including - in the third), and then approved at a plenary meeting. However, such a claim is procedural in nature.

To date, nearly 140 countries have abolished the death penalty or a moratorium on its use. Last year, death sentences were executed only in 27 countries.
