Germus (Dagetegi) village in Turkish Urfa Province was announced tourist center five years ago, however, the Armenian church in this village, which was earlier inhabited by Armenians, is still left to its fate, Turkish website Urfanatik reported.

The church, built by seven Armenian brothers in the village of Germus in the 19th century, is being destroyed.

Mehmed Guzel, who studies historical monuments in Urfa Province, noted that the church was used by orthodox Armenians until 1915.

“After 1915, Germush village was transferred to Sumer pasha, who served in the Hamidiye Irregular Cavalry Regiment. Now the village is in hands of descendants of Sumer pasha. If this church is restored, then it will bring great benefit to the development of tourism in Urfa. We want it to be restored and reopened for religious rites,” Mehmed Guzel said.

One of the residents of the village noted that the church is constantly being destroyed by treasure hunters.
