YEREVAN. – No longer the President, but the government of Armenia will impose martial law in the country. 

The draft amendments to the law on martial law was approved at Thursday’s Cabinet session of the government. 

In addition, the National Assembly will be able to revoke martial law and the respective measures that are taken.

This power is passing from the President to the government pursuant to the constitutional amendments, which passed as a result of the referendum in December 2015. 

Accordingly, the powers of the President of Armenia are drastically reduced in favor of the country’s parliament and government. 

The respective transition period will end on April 9, 2018, when incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan’s term in office comes to an end.
