This January-September, the Armenian agricultural sector registered a 16.7% decline against a 10% growth in the country’s industry. Even government officials describe the situation in Armenia’s agricultural sector as a “crisis” and mention industrial recovery.

However, the agricultural sector, which is going through crisis - and has suffered from droughts and heavy rains – is creating more values than the “recovering” industrial sector. The agricultural sector’s share in Armenia’s GDP is 17.1% against the industrial sector’s 15%.

Such disproportions account for the fact that the weather has great impact on economic growth in Armenia, whereas other countries do not register such impact.

Specifically, Russia has had a severer drought, which caused 12% decline in the country’s agricultural sector. However, it hardly affected the GDP – Russia registered 3.6% GDP growth this January-October.
