Global democracy has declined significantly over the last year, according to the latest edition of the Democracy Index published by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index provides a snapshot of the state of democracy worldwide for 165 independent states and two territories.

Based on its scores on a range of indicators within these categories, each country is then itself classified as one of four types of regime: “full democracy ”; “flawed democracy ”; “hybrid regime”; and “authoritarian regime”.

Armenia has been ranked the 111th in the Democracy Index, which means it is listed among “hybrid regime”. Neighboring Georgia (79) and Turkey (100) are also included in the same group. Azerbaijan and Russia are listed among “authoritarian regime”.

According to our Media Freedom Index, only 30 countries out of the 167 covered by the Democracy Index—representing 11% of the world’s population—are classified as “fully free”. Another 40 countries, representing 34.2% of the world’s population, are classified as “partly free”. Some 97 countries in our Media Freedom Index are rated as “unfree” or “largely unfree”.

As to Media Freedom Index, Armenia (109) is listed among “largely unfree” countries.
