“Presently Kars-Akhalkalaki-Baku railway construction is suspended, however the project is naturally underway,” MP and Javakhk Patriotic Union President Shirak Torosyan told NEWS.am. Asked what will happen to the railway if Armenian-Turkish border opens, Torosyan said: “Frankly, I find difficulty in replying and make assumptions whether the railway will be completed or not. Nevertheless, I suppose it is pointless to spend millions of dollars in case when Kars-Gyumri railway operates.”

According to him, in this case Kars-Akhalkalaki-Baku railway should be constructed for political purposes, however “if Turkey opens the border, political purpose seems to appear of no use.” Asked whether Georgia will be the only party interested in the railway construction, Torosyan replied: “Tbilisi is interested as far as is concerned with being a direct dealer for Turkey and Armenia in freight transportation. However Georgia will not lose much if the railway passes through Armenia and Gyumri-Tbilisi railway operates.”
