German Chancellor Angel Merkel’s statement that Ankara is the major obstacle to solving the Cyprus problem, made during her visit to Cyprus, has caused a negative response in Turkey.

According to CNNturk, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu called on Merkel to be unbiased regarding the Cyprus issue. Turkey has always wished for Germany to intensify its role in solving the Cyprus problem, believing that it will have a positive impact. However, Ms. Merkel’s recent statement raises doubt, said Davutoglu,  stressing that Turkey would always support the efforts of Berlin in the peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem, if Germany will stick to an “objective” position.
