The Armenian Assembly of American (Assembly) expresses its deep sadness at the national tragedy that occurred in Tucson, Arizona on January 8, 2010 where six people were killed and 13 others, among them U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords were injured.

 “Congresswoman Giffords was a leader in the U.S. House on countless issues and resolutions, including human rights and genocide prevention measures. Representative Giffords cast two ‘Yes’ votes in support of U.S. reaffirmation of the Armenian Genocide in the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2007 and 2010.

This abhorrent act should serve as a signal to all of what can happen when an environment of intolerance flourishes. We are deeply saddened that this horrendous crime took place, yet we are hopeful that Congresswoman Giffords will make a speedy recovery and resume her duties as the U.S. Representative from Arizona’s 8th district in the near future. In these trying times, we are inspired by the outpouring of support that has been given to the Giffords family and to all the families who are suffering today.

Our resolve as a nation will be measured by our response to this unthinkable tragedy and we are encouraged by the support, optimism and generosity of all Americans.  Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords as she recovers. We also grieve with the families of U.S. District Judge John Roll, Christina Taylor Green, Gabriel Zimmerman, Dorwin Stoddard, Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck, and the entire Tucson community,” reads the statement issued by Assembly.
