“Heritage” parliamentary faction is preparing for a meeting with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg and will raise issues on the country’s democratic situation.

The meeting will place emphasis on the events of March 1, 2008, the rights of people kept in prison for political views, use of army against peaceful protestors, as well as denying broadcasting license to some Armenian channels, particularly A1+,  Heritage MP and member of the Armenian delegation to PACE Zaruhi Postanjyan told NEWS.am. According to her, the amendments to the Electoral Code will be considered as well.

“We will emphasize that if these problems are not solved, Armenia will not be secure against a “new March 1” with a worse scenario,” Postanjyan said.

Commenting on her expectations for Hammarberg’s visit to Armenia, the parliamentarian stressed the Commissioner’s visit aims at preparing a report on the elimination of March 1 consequences and on the level of democracy in the country. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and Ministerial Committee will express their stance on Armenia based on this report, she noted.

According to Postanjyan, “Heritage” aims to provide the EU official with objective information on democracy in Armenia and take measures to eliminate consequences of March 1 events, preventing further violations of human rights in Armenia.

As NEWS.am reported previously, EU Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg will arrive in Armenia on January 18. He will meet Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Leader of Armenian National Congress (ANC) Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
