No Armenians were injured in the rallies, Armenian Ambassador to Egypt Armen Melkonian told Armenian News-NEWS.am. He noted that Armenians did not participate in the January 25-26 riots. Ambassador said the situation in Cairo is calm.
The Egyptian authorities banned on Wednesday all demonstrations in the country after thousands of people participated in yesterday’s rallies demanding incumbent president’s resignation, the Telegraph reported.
About 200 demonstrators were arrested in Cairo during riots calling for an end to Hosni Mubarak’s rule. Three people including a policeman were killed in the clashes with security forces, local press reported.
The Armenian community of Egypt totals about 8,500 people. There are 6 operating churches in Egypt.
