YEREVAN. – Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan does not believe that serious breakthrough on Karabakh issue is possible at this stage.

Speaking about the latest conversation between Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev in Dushanbe, Iskandaryan told reporters that any serious movement is unlikely to happen.

 The political analyst recalled that there are certain arrangements, the Minsk format continues, but even this process cannot lead to a serious result given the differences of the parties.

As to the direct contact, Iskandaryan noted that although they existed in the past, it is difficult to image how they can be restored.

“The interaction has to continue within the OSCE Minsk Group. There was a veiled statement. On the other hand, it is necessary to use any opportunity to maintain the format of interaction,” Iskandaryan noted.

Speaking about the situation in Azerbaijan, the political scientist stressed that the situation there is very different from Armenia, as there is a completely different regime, which has introduced a system of massive inspections and bans, including the participation of civil society in the projects of interaction with the Armenian side. At the same time, he noted that the fake platforms created by the Azerbaijani authorities cannot be considered as platforms for interaction.
