Dozens of drivers are holding an unauthorized protest action in the Theater Square in Armenia’s second largest city of Gyumri, Chairman of “Asparez” club Levon Barseghyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am. The number of protestors is increasing. Armenian MPs from “Heritage” party Stepan Safaryan, Armen Martirosyan and Zaruhi Postanjyan are also taking part in the protest.

The demonstrators are collecting AMD 100 (U.S. $0.27) each to contribute to Armenia’s budget.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, on February 10, over 200 drivers from Gyumri were holding a protest action at the Bavra checkpoint on the Armenian-Georgian border. Representatives of the Armenian National Congress and “Heritage” party, as well as leader of People’s Party Tigran Karapetyan took part in the protest.

Over 60 policemen from Road Police and regional police department are following the protest action. The police cordoned off the area in the morning to stop angry protests by local car owners against the abolition of a legal loophole that allowed them to pay significantly lower import taxes.
