The United States appealed to the International Criminal Court with the requirement to withdraw Iran’s claim to recover $1.75 billion, which were confiscated by US courts, Reuters reported. 

The US Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that the assets should be transferred to the families of the American military who died as a result of the bombing of the US Marine Corps in Beirut in 1983.

Iran’s demand is based on the 1955 amnesty agreement, which was signed 24 years before the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

“The actions at the root of this case center on Iran’s support for international terrorism,” Richard Visek, legal advisor to the U.S. Department of State, said on Monday.
