Armenian Health Ministry submitted for the discussion in the government a concept which may be crucial for preserving health of future generations – flour enriched with vitamins and minerals.
England, the United States and Canada have enriched flour with vitamins and minerals for more than six decades. At the moment over 50 countries, including our neighbors, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey are carrying out relevant programs which resulted in improving health of the citizens.
Lack of minerals and vitamins (such as, iron, vitamin B9, vitamin A, etc.) is among the most serious problems worldwide. Over two billion people all over the globe do not get sufficient quantity of iron in their food. As a result 47% of preschool age children and 42% of pregnant women are suffering from anemia. The same problems are observed in Armenia as well.
Armenia is importing wheat, whereas almost entire flour production is based in the country. This makes easier implementation of the program, as flour production is mainly carried out by 6 large mills with a capacity of 1350 tons per day.
Taking into account the health problems typical for Armenians flour must be enriched with increment of iron and vitamin B9.
According to preliminary estimates, $3.4 million investments are required for introduction and implementation of this program in Armenia. Certain part of investments will be made by private companies.
