YEREVAN. – Representatives of the National Agenda Party—of Armenia, whose establishment was announced Monday, believe that the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict can be resolved solely if Artsakh were to be joined to Armenia.

Party member Ara Hakobyan said the situation has changed in all respects, including with Armenia’s foreign partners; and as a result, new opportunities have emerged.

“An objective of unification [between Armenia and Artsakh] should be laid down,” Hakobyan said. “A new agenda for [Karabakh peace] talks [should be] started, and the world will recognize such an opportunity.”

In his words, even though the Madrid Principles—to resolve the Karabakh conflict—should be abandoned, the OSCE Minsk Group-mediated negotiations need to continue—but with new approaches.

“There is a need to clearly grasp what mutual concessions and concessions mean,” Ara Hakobyan added. “It’s noted in the Madrid Principles that we [the Armenian party to the conflict] are conceding. But it’s unclear what we will get in exchange.”
