Reforms in the Armenian army pursue two main objectives: creation of national and international security guarantees, said Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan.

“To provide national guarantees means to create a trained, highly professional, democratically controlled army with a high fighting spirit,” he said delivering a speech at the Yerevan State University. As to international guarantees, the minister said our aim is enhance reputation of the country which includes participation of the Armenian military personnel in peacekeeping missions.

Speaking of a possible transition to fully contractual military service, Seyran Ohanyan found it expedient when the country is neither at war nor at peace. “The Armenian armed forces will comprise both conscripts and contract soldiers for a long time,” he added. 

Ohanyan also noted that army discipline is enhanced year after year. “The Ministry of Defense is open to public and accepts constructive criticism,” the minister assured, noting there are still many ill-wishers.
