Twenty-nine tons of opium was seized at the Tehran International Airport, Iran-based jamejamonline.ir website reported.

Drugs were transported from China to the Indian city of Mumbai. Later it was transported by a special plane to Tehran ordered by one of the Iranian private pharmaceutical companies. Payment for goods was made through one of the Iranian banks.

According to unofficial information, opium was transported to the country with the permission of healthcare ministry and was intended for production of medicine.
