China has an interest in stability in Iran. This is what Director of the China-Eurasia Board for Political and Strategic Studies Foundation and Oriental studies expert Mher Sahakyan said during a discussion entitled “Iran and the Changing World Order”.

According to him, China plays a major role in the situation concerning Iran and is against the creation of a nuclear weapon. Although Beijing supported the sanctions proposed by the UN Security Council, it never applied sanctions against China. The Oriental studies expert touched upon the history of Iran’s nuclear weapon and the positions that Iran’s Presidents have expressed.

Following India’s example, Iran tried to create a nuclear weapon with the hope that when this becomes a reality, the international community will have to come to grips with this, but this didn’t happen.

The expert stated that the first reason why China has an interest in Iran is because of Iran’s energy resources. At the same time, Iran is in a major center for communications and oversees the Gulf through which energy resources are sent to China.

Iran is a major market for Chinese products, and China views Iran as a major role-player in the “One Zone, One Road” program.

However, no matter how important Iran’s relations with China are, China has a stronger interest in its relations with the US.
