The political negotiations over the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are currently in a deadlock. This is what leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia Aram Sargsyan said during the scientific-practical conference entitled “Legitimacy of the Formation of the Republic of Artsakh from the Perspective of International Law” on 3 April.

According to him, Armenia still hasn’t used its full potential to achieve a settlement of the conflict. “The conflict needs to be moved to the legal field, but Armenia still hasn’t done this. The organizing committee “In defense of the Republic of Artsakh”, which was established in 1996 and was leading a policy contrary to the failed policy of the Armenian authorities of the time, supports the shaping of a common approach to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in which the essence of the conflict will be expressed,” he stated.

In his speech, the leader of the political party said the incumbent authorities need to join this process, particularly at the level of the parliament.

In his turn, analyst Alexander Manasyan said the analysis of the conflict needs to begin from the events of the 20th century when the Republic of Azerbaijan was formed. “Nagorno-Karabakh is not a part of Azerbaijan. This attests to the fact that modern-day Azerbaijan, declaring itself as the legal successor of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, can’t have any pretensions to the territory of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” the analyst stated.

The participants of the conference will adopt a declaration that will be addressed to the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the Government of Armenia.
