Seismologists say 8.9 magnitude earthquake, not 7.9 as it was reported earlier, struck Japan on Friday morning, RIA Novosti reports.
The epicenter is located 373 to north-east from Japan’s capital, Tokyo at the depth of 24 kilometers.
A 10-meter tsunami is reported to hit the Miyagi prefecture. Highway in Iwate prefecture was partly destroyed and cars fell into the sea, Japan’s NHK television reports.
A tsunami warning has been issued for Honshu and Fukushima prefectures.
