On March 23, the newly appointed Swedish Ambassador to Armenia Diana Janse (residence -Tbilisi) presented her credentials to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the Swedish government’s decision to establish an embassy in the region and expressed hope Sweden will open its embassy in Armenia too in the near future, the presidential press service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, it will be a good impetus to improvement of bilateral relations. The Swedish Ambassador stressed though her residence is in Tbilisi, she will visit Armenia frequently.

“Sweden is interested in the region. We want Armenia to be on close terms with the European Union and good-neighborly relations with its neighbors.  We want to provide assistance to Armenia in this issue,” she said.

During the meeting the officials discussed Armenia-EU cooperation and Armenia-Turkey normalization. Serzh Sargsyan presented the Swedish Ambassador the recent developments in the Karabakh peace process.

The Armenian leader expressed gratitude to Sweden for recognition of the Armenian Genocide and stressed Armenian people are grateful to all those nations who respect the memory of Armenian Genocide victims. Sargsyan stressed it contributes to preventing further genocides against humanity.

“The sooner Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide, the better it is for two sides. We do not live in the past. The evidence thereof was Armenia’s initiative on normalization of relations with Turkey.  However, it does not mean the recognition of Armenian Genocide is not a primary issue for Armenia,” Sargsyan noted.
