Talks on the Karabakh settlement have long been conducted only around the Madrid principles, and there are no other documents yet, first ombudswoman of Armenia, human rights activist Larisa Alaverdyan told reporters on Wednesday.

According to her, no decision or signed document will have any impact on Karabakh if this happens without his participation.

The formal statements of the Armenian leadership that ‘Karabakh is Armenia’ at this stage look like an attempt to prepare the ground for Yerevan to make decisions independently without the participation of Stepanakert, she said adding that there is no Karabakh problem, the people have already solved it for a long time, but there is a Karabakh response that is steadily following the path of forming a legal and democratic state.

An attempt to present the legacy of the former authorities on the Karabakh issue in a certain way may look like an attempt by the current ruling force to justify its actions in the future, she said adding that the function of Armenia in the talks process is to protect the interests of Karabakh, and not play any other role, for example, to compare its military potential with the capabilities of Azerbaijan. 

“Our strength lies in the spirit and unity of society, and now we see attempts to split this unity,” she said. “It is important that some ministers, making any statements or making decisions, should also evaluate its political and public resonance.”
