Greek police used water cannons and tear gas against hundreds of migrants on the Turkish border as well as fired warning shots into the air, Reuters reported. 

A Greek army vehicle equipped with speakers informed migrants in Arabic and other languages that the border was closed.

Over 10,000 migrants have tried to break through the border since Turkey announced it would no longer comply with the 2016 deal with the EU to stop illegal migration flows to Europe in exchange for billions of euros in aid.

Greece and the EU accuse Turkey of intentionally pushing migrants to cross the border, trying to blackmail Brussels.

EU leaders pledged € 700 million in aid to Greece on Tuesday and called on Turkey to implement the 2016 deal.
